Bongzilla & Tons – “Doom Sessions Vol 4”

Originally released in April 2021 by the powerhouse Italian stoner and doom label Heavy Psych Sounds Records, Doom Sessions Vol. 4 is a mammoth, smoke-filled split album that pairs Madison, Wisconsin’s legendary cannabis-crust titans Bongzilla with Turin, Italy’s heavy sludge-weedriffers Tons. What makes this record incredibly cool is how beautifully it highlights the evolution of modern stoner-doom across two continents, packing the vinyl with previously unreleased tracks specifically recorded for the series. Side A features Bongzilla operating as a lean, thunderous three-piece, churning out their classic, raw “Weedsconsin” sludge characterized by Mule Boy’s raspy, throat-shredding growls and fuzzy, down-tuned riffs. Side B lets Tons completely stretch their sonic wings with the monstrous, multi-part epic Chronic Morning Obesity, a track dripping with slow, suffocating, and hypnotic rhythmic weight. Influenced by the pioneering, feedback-drenched walls of sound laid down by Electric Wizard, Sleep, and Grief, the split stands out as a devastatingly heavy masterpiece of slow-motion riffage.
