Initially self-released in 2009 through Nice Life Records before being picked up, remixed, and remastered for a wider 2011 release by Small Stone Records, Sasquanaut (frequently listed on distribution sites as Sasquanant) is the foundational sophomore album that put Columbus, Ohio’s Lo-Pan on the heavy rock map. Under the studio touch of Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios, the reissue polished the band’s massive, sandblasted grooves without losing any of their localized DIY friction. The record bridges the pummeling, low-end fuzz of desert-rock pioneers like Kyuss with the intricate, off-kilter rhythmic structures of Spoonman-era Soundgarden. Driven by the soaring, impassioned vocal range of Jeff Martin and the unrelenting basslines of Skot Thompson, sprawling tracks like Dragline, Savage Henry, and the mammoth closer Wade Garrett solidified the group’s rare ability to fuse melodic alt-rock soul with dense, monolithic doom-sludge.
