The Ghouls – “It’s your time to die”

Emerging from the Boston hardcore and punk underground, The Ghouls delivered an uncompromising, hyper-melodic dose of horror-themed street punk with their 2005 release, It’s Your Time To Die. Originally tracked at Stoughton, Massachusetts’ famed Outpost studio with producer Jim Siegel and The Unseen‘s Mark Unseen, this six-track EP was put out via A.D.D. Records. The release stands out for discarding the campy shock-rock tropes often found in the subgenre, opting instead to deliver bleak, politically conscious lyricism wrapped in razor-sharp, driving rhythm sections and dueling guitar leads. Tracks like Armageddon and Carnival of Souls display a fierce musicianship that draws heavily from the dark, aggressive structures of T.S.O.L. and the blistering, anthemic speed of early AFI, making it a definitive mid-2000s document of New England horror punk.
