As a foundational force in the 1980s East Bay hardcore scene, Fang made a triumphant and abrasive return with their 2012 studio album, Here Come the Cops. Released via Malt Soda Recordings, the record marks a significant chapter in the band’s history, featuring the return of original guitarist Tom Flynn to collaborate and track alongside longtime vocalist Sammytown. The album stands out for successfully capturing the heavy, mid-tempo sludge and aggressive attitude that defined their early years, completely dodging the overly polished traps of modern studio production. Anchored by biting standouts like That Bitch Is Gonna Blow and the cynicism of As Much As I Hate You, the album also includes a pair of well-integrated covers: a localized rendition of The Jim Carroll Band‘s People Who Died and an aggressive take on UK metal band Girlschool‘s Let’s Go. Sonically, the release pulls heavily from the menacing, nihilistic hardcore blueprint established by their own legendary early work and peers like Flipper and Black Flag, while infusing a layer of dark punk rock swagger reminiscent of Tales of Terror.
