Drongos for Europe – “Barcode Generation”

Formed in Birmingham during the initial wave of UK punk in 1979, Drongos for Europe re-emerged decades later to deliver an uncompromising blast of street-level resistance with their 2004 studio album, Barcode Generation. Originally captured at Blotto Studios in their hometown alongside recording engineer Simon Bishop, the album was released through California’s Puke N Vomit Records, with later UK pressings arriving via DFE Records and Dislocate Records. The record serves as a masterfully constructed bridge between generations of anti-establishment rock, matching Dek Baker’s driving basslines with sharp, melodic songwriting that tackles modern societal alienation. Tracks like Spirit Bomb and Mayday emphasize the group’s ability to maintain a blistering tempo without sacrificing massive, infectious choruses. Sonically, the release builds directly upon the aggressive, working-class templates of early UK82 street punk legends like The Exploited and G.B.H., while infusing a rhythmic precision and anthemic vocal swagger that echoes the definitive work of Stiff Little Fingers and The Ruts.
