The Disciples – “Redemption”

Formed in 2008 as a distinct creative outlet alongside the legendary West Coast punk outfit Fang, The Disciples provided a striking, heavy platform for frontman Sammytown (Sam McBride) to vent socio-political frustration and personal evolution. Released in 2012 by Malt Soda Recordings, Redemption stands as the project’s defining full-length studio moment, bringing together key collaborators including drummer Jamey Dangerous, bassist Scary Larry Tamez, and guitarists Mat “The Kid” McCoy and J-Stain Werthless. The record separates itself from typical street-punk fare by leaning into themes of recovery, resilience, and anti-drug messaging without ever losing a shred of confrontational bite, as clearly mapped out across original anthems like Killing Spree and the title track, Redemption. Sonically, the album successfully pairs the dark, aggressive, sludge-infused hardcore framework of mid-’80s Fang and Black Flag with a blistering layer of fast-tempo hard rock and roll energy, rounded out by a pair of aggressive nods to their foundational influences: a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ Paint It Black and Flipper’s The Money Will Roll Right In.
