Absinthe Rose / Human Wine Split

Originally released in 2010 through a collaboration of underground labels including Rodent Popsicle Records, Screech Owl Records, and Nervous Relatives Records, the split album Absinthe Rose / Humanwine captures a stellar intersection of Boston’s fiercely independent acoustic punk, folk, and gypsy-rock scenes.

Absinthe Rose, spearheaded by singer-songwriter Kimbo Rose, delivers the first half of the record with an eclectic mix of Americana, cowpunk, and traditional folk-punk, anchoring her songs with sharp storytelling and acoustic rhythms reminiscent of acts like Mischief Brew or Defiance, Ohio. Humanwine takes over the latter portion of the split, plunging the listener into a theatrical world of dark cabaret, neofolk, and gypsy jazz led by the distinct vocals of Holly Brewer. By blending these non-traditional underground styles with a defiant, anti-authoritarian punk ethos, the split functions as a compelling and unique sonic document of the Northeast’s multi-faceted DIY landscape.
