Earth – “Live at Thirdman Records”

Live at Third Man Records is a 2017 live album from Washingtonian drone metal pioneers Earth. Released by Third Man Records for Record Store Day Black Friday, the performance was captured live-to-tape on August 1, 2016, in the label’s Blue Room venue located in Nashville, Tennessee. The physical release was pressed primarily on standard black vinyl, alongside a limited blue-and-black split-color variant.

The recording features a specific four-song set tracking the band’s transition into a more minimalist, cinematic style of instrumental rock. Fronted by founding guitarist Dylan Carlson and anchored by drummer Adrienne Davies, Earth uses the live platform to lean heavily into slower tempos, repetitive desert-rock motifs, and clean, warm amplifier tones rather than the crushing wall of distortion that defined their early 1990s material. The record features additional instrumentation from guest guitarist Brett Netson, who fills out the low-end textures with a Moog Taurus synthesizer.
